They do a great job explaining the generosity of Waite Phillips and the legacy of his gift. Plus, the house is just plain cool!

Interesting tour of the summer home of the Phillips family, for whom Philmont is named.

Awesome museum. Waite Phillips's gift to the Boy Scouts of America. See how a truly great man and his family lived in the southwest in the 1930's. The creation of a great legacy for the youth of America.

"The only things we keep permanently are the things we give away." Waite Phillips certainly gave one of his greatest gifts to Scouting in the form of the 130 Acre Philmont Scout Ranch. Though Waite did not have the opportunity to be a Scout himself he was very impressed with the way Scouting helped young people Grow into responsible leaders and contributors to their society. So impressed he gave part of his vast ranch to Scouts so they could excel in their High Adventure Programs. Boy Scouts of American (BSA) was very grateful for the offer but had no way to fund such a large operation. So Waite gave BSA his Building in Tulsa, Ok. to make money on rent to pay for operations. Waite continued to give to BSA and eventually donated his Vacation home Villa Philmonte to BSA to use as their First Philmont National Training Center. The Villa is now a Museum but the National Training Center sill operates on the Villa Grounds. There is History of America in this building, and the story of a man who truly believed he had to give in order to keep. This is a wonderful tour whether your coming off a back country Trek or just passing through the area. Its only 10 minutes south of Cimarron so stop by before you make the pass.

Note that you must register for the tour (I signed up at the bookstore at Philmont Base Camp) and be accompanied by a tour guide. You will be asked to remove your shoes and walk bare- or stocking-footed, to protect the expensive floor coverings.

Great tour. Interesting history related to Scouting!
