The History of Cimarron and Northern New Mexico all ended up here at the Aztec Museum. As locations around town changed hands much of the historical artifacts were sent to the mill. You can see original billiard balls from the St James, Mountain Man Coat from Kit Carson and many more artifacts. This is part of the Cimarron and Santa Fe Walking tour as well. The museum is run by volunteers so its not fancy like big city museums, and it sad that some of the artifacts may eventually deteriorate, but there's still lots of interesting history about Colfax County and plenty of Old West Characters.
The Aztec Mill was essentially built by Lucien Maxwell, owner of the land grant originally acquired by his father-in-law and his partner. This mill was built during the Civil War and was used to mill flour to provide for Jiracilla Apaches and Navajos interred at Fort Sumner as well as others in the area. This is a wonderful museum in a town with a lot of history. The only bad thing about this place is that it's not open during the winter. If you're on a frontier history tour out here, make sure you visit nearby Chase Ranch, the Kit Carson Museum at Rayado, Fort Union, and the Bosque Redondo Museum in Fort Sumner. The Billy the Kid Museum at Fort Sumner is also good. The Old Fort Museum not so great. But, the grave of Billy the Kid and, more importantly, Lucien Maxwell is located there.
Very interesting. Lots of local history
